5 tips for a career in sustainability or the environment

Considering a career in the Sustainability or Environment sectors? Improve your chances before even applying, with these 5 top tips

Each year the Careers Service holds an event where a panel of those already working in the Sustainability and Environment sectors share their experiences of what it’s like to work in this field, the qualifications you need to get there, and which other ‘strings to your bow’ can help you stand out alongside other applicants.

We’ve picked their top 5 tips for things you can start working on right NOW to improve your chances of entering and being successful in this career sector…

Do your research

The Sustainability field is broad-ranging, so speak to as many people as you can to find out about the different areas. For example, working in sustainable finance for a large bank is very different to working for a large development organisation or a small impact investment fund, that goes directly into the field and does due diligence to find out which entrepreneur is worth investing in.

Take every opportunity

Maximise your chances of employment by taking every opportunity of work experience and development that comes your way. In other words, say yes to everything and work out how to do it later!

Justify sustainability

Be prepared to justify why you think something is sustainable and a ‘good thing’. What benefits does it bring to an organisation?

Network now

Start with your peers. People you see every day may be a future client, investor, consulting services provider in the sustainability space. Connect with like-minded people on Facebook and other social media sustainability groups now. You will have more confidence speaking with your peers so start your networking close to home.

Get involved

Employers look for passion and interest that can be backed up with examples – societies you’ve worked for, projects you’ve been involved with. Join a relevant project that will help you to stand out from the crowd.

There are many things you can start doing right now to improve your chances of moving your career forward, so we hope you find this a useful starting point.
