To mark International Women’s Day 2020, we have compiled a list of interesting events taking place in Cambridge! Many of them may boost your sector knowledge and help you scope out what fascinates you…

Rise & Revolt: a screening of international short films
Presented by Watersprite Film Festival
Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge
Saturday 7 March, 3.30-5pm

A free screening of Watersprite 2020’s nominated short films followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. Each film deals with the topic of revolt – from inner family conflicts, to fast-paced fury and finally political and social rebellion.

Radioactive film preview and satellite Q&A
Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge
Sunday 8 March, from 1.30pm

An exclusive preview of Radioactive, a biopic of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. The film will be followed by a live satellite Q&A with star Rosamund Pike and director Marjane Satrapi, broadcast live from Curzon Mayfair.

Claire Nicholson on Virginia Woolf 
Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge
Tuesday 10 March, 1-2.30pm

A talk by Dr Claire Nicholson, Chair of the Virginia Woolf Society, entitled ‘A Public of Two’, about the ambivalent friendship between Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield.

A Woman’s worth: exploring the gender divide in Pakistani culture
Anglia Ruskin University
Tuesday 10 March, 6.30-7.30pm

Dr Sabina Akram highlights the struggles Asian women often face within their communities in regards to expectations of getting married and starting a family. She is going to discuss women, particularly from ethnic backgrounds, not being judged for not being married and instead focusing on their careers.

Ivana Bartoletti keynote talk
Murray Edwards College, Cambridge
Thursday 12 March, from 6.30pm

Head to the Wellcome Collection for an evening of discussion about the impact on women of industries built by men. The keynote speaker is Ivana Bartoletti, is a privacy and data protection expert and a public speaker and commentator on issues where technology intersects politics. Ivana is Co-Founder of the Women Leading in AI Network, and received the Woman of the Year Award in the 2019 Cybersecurity Awards for her work on digital ethics and equality.

“I built that!”: a celebration of women in construction and real estate
Hosted by CRASSH and the Department of Engineering
Magdalene College, Cambridge
Wednesday 18 March, 5.30-6.45pm

Five women, including an architect, developer, engineer, planner and plumber, will give a short talk about their favourite construction or real estate project. An interactive Q&A will follow using an online platform to encourage contribution from all of those in the audience.

Ambition without limits: Women in STEM
Presented by Cambridge Science Festival
Wolfson College, Cambridge
Wednesday 18 March, from 6pm

Professor Jane Clarke, FRS, distinguished biophysical chemist and President of Wolfson College, chairs a panel discussing women’s experience in STEM fields. She is joined by four women at various stages of their careers, both from the academy and industry. They will share what barriers they faced in their careers, how they successfully overcame them, and how they pave the way for subsequent generations of women in STEM.

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign is centred around the theme #EachForEqual: reflecting on how we can ‘actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements. Equality is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world’.
